| Making the Ask
This section contains advice on making the "ask" to solicit funds
for the organization.
An important goal of the No to Municipal Mergers group is to raise
money. Since the coalition is not a political party, and there is
no official electoral campaign going on in Quebec, the group is free to
solicit funds as a non-profit group. The web presents an excellent
potential to gathering revenue.
Several types of "asks" may be made. One is to ask users
to give their personal information, and allow themselves to be put on mailing
lists. Another is to have interactive petitions, which send Email
to their member of parliament. Doing this, however, is not very effective,
as most Members will ignore bulk Email. It is best to demonstrate
a template protest letter, and advise a user to copy the format, and send
their own typed or hand-written letter by post to their elected representative.
Another type of ask, is an ask for money. On the main page there are
several links to facilitate this. The "Help Us Fight" link
graphic, and the button on top of the main navigation bar on top.
A simple donation page should be set up, with credit card validation
capability. Contract out to a Canadian bank Ecommerce service
to do this, as they can handle the transaction and security component.
Also the user has a greater trust and sense of legitimacy if they
are giving their credit card numbers to a trusted third party,
they may already deal with for other online transactions.
Refer as well to the privacy policy noted on the issues
page.
Apart form asking for money, one main recommendation is the integration
and use of the "Bumper Sticker" sale method.
The
Je me souviendrai logo and theme is a great tool. [I will remember forced
municipal mergers. This can only be available in French, as Quebec's
sign law prohibits the use of English or any other language in public signiage
in Quebec. That includes the bumper stickers on the cars of Quebec
residents, as well as any signiage posted on any property and visible to
the public in plain view]
This logo is the motto of the campaign. Various promotional items have
been printed up. These can either be sold, or better yet,
given "free" as a reward for donations. For example, a $5.00
donation will get the user a small sticker. A larger donation
will get the user a big bumper sticker, T-shirt, or other paraphernalia.
Actual front bumper plastic plates with this logo are available,
and Quebec residents are permitted to place them on the fronts
of their cars, as front license plates are not required in Quebec.
The web page that advertises this logo should be constructed like
an E-commerce page, showing slick photos of the various items,
to entice people into donating to get them.
