The 4th of July in Washington DC

I was in Washington DC for the 4th of July celebrations in both 2001 and 2002. There was a big change in one year. The day had a fun carnival like atmoshpere with parades and pavilions allong the National Mall. In 2002 the security was nuts. The place was fenced off like an armed camp. It was safe, but it felt like some of the fun was totally sapped out of the day as freedom of movement was restricted.
